DOGE Takes Aim at Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as Musk Tweets ‘RIP’

Elon Musk may be setting his sights on dismantling the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the federal agency responsible for protecting consumers from financial scams and corporate misconduct.

On Friday, Musk hinted at this possibility with a cryptic “RIP” tweet, just as his team—tasked with cutting government spending under former President Donald Trump—began scrutinizing the agency’s finances and personnel.

Later that day, Russell Vought, Trump’s recently confirmed budget chief, was appointed as the acting director of the CFPB. According to an inside source, Vought—a longtime Trump supporter—was a key figure in shaping Project 2025, a conservative policy framework that includes a proposal to eliminate the bureau altogether.

With Musk and his allies now involved, the future of the CFPB is uncertain. Whether this marks the beginning of a major shakeup or just another controversial move remains to be seen.
